These maps come from the Lancashire Archives where they can be consulted, free of charge, without appointment. Support our regional archives! They're rough snaps and they've been pieced together quite obviously by me, and I'm not apologising for their lack of finesse - you need to go to the archives and view the real thing for yourself to get the full beauty of them.
They are from the 1849 5-inch OS maps. I've yet to find the even bigger scale 25-inch map of central Bury, but one day this will happen.
You can pick out what remains of the medieval plots of central Bury in the snaps below, and big gaps in the centre where recent demolition for grand building schemes had happened. They're an amazing historical resource because they catch the old town just as the railway's arrived, which accelerated the pace of change. As Baines Directory of 1824 says, '...old dilapidated buildings are giving way to handsome erections...'
