The Greek trading colonies dominated the eastern Mediterranean after about 400 BC, bringing with them a distinctive style of architecture, coinage as a means of exchange, fashions of dress and the Greek writing script.
This is the possibly the first time that one wealthy country has influenced its surrounding hinterland so greatly. It seems that everyone wanted to look Greek and buy into Greek fashions.
From this time onwards the cities of the Levant show this 'Hellenising' influence.
The Romans were also follwers of Greek fashion - but when they made it big and becme the rulers of the known world, they called it 'Roman'.....
